My Story | Engaging Senior Communities with Music:
My name is Dave Johnson, I play guitar and sing, and I would love the opportunity to perform for your residents and their families.
As a full-time senior community entertainer, I understand the vital role that music plays in the lives of people of advanced age who are facing health and social challenges.
This became deeply personal for me after my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2017.
During her six-year decline, music became a primary way for me to engage with my mom. At one of my last visits with her, I played my guitar and sang, like I had done for many visits before.
She was essentially nonverbal by then, and had gone into visual shutdown. However, when I started playing my guitar and singing, she would open her eyes briefly, grin, and start moving her head to the music. And when I would stop playing, she would open her eyes again, and looked at me as if to say, "why did you stop?". It was a moment I am very grateful for. It was one of our last moments together where her sassy personality came across.
That experience inspired me to dedicate my career to spreading joy and bringing comfort to seniors.
My performances include familiar, uplifting songs, sing-a-longs, and funny stories from my childhood and life experiences, that make for a fun, engaging morning or afternoon.
